Project Gigahubs

Project Gigahubs was a national initiative led by the UK government to improve broadband access and speeds in mostly rural areas. The programme focused on connecting public sector buildings – such as schools, libraries, and council facilities – with fast, reliable full fibre broadband.

Bringing Full Fibre to Leicestershire

In October 2022, Leicestershire County Council secured government funding to deliver full fibre infrastructure to 43 public sector sites across the county. These sites were in locations where commercial providers were unlikely to invest due to high costs or limited access.

Delivery Timeline

• Start of works: July 2023
• Completion: March 2024

Sites Connected

Thanks to this investment, the following public buildings now benefit from gigabit-capable broadband:

• 30 schools
• 7 libraries
• 3 waste sites
• 3 council depots

These upgrades support better digital services, enhance learning environments, and improve operational efficiency across rural Leicestershire.
