Project Gigabit is the UK Government’s £5 billion programme to bring gigabit-capable broadband to homes and businesses in hard-to-reach areas. It targets locations not covered by commercial broadband plans – mostly rural and remote communities that risk being left behind.

Project Gigabit in Leicestershire
Leicestershire is part of Lot 11, alongside Warwickshire.
- In February 2024, a £71 million contract was awarded to CityFibre
- Build began in December 2024
- Over 14,500 premises in Leicestershire are expected to be connected
Leicestershire County Council is working with BDUK to explore ways to extend coverage even further.
