2G and 3G Switch Off

The UK’s mobile operators are gradually switching off their 2G and 3G networks, and all mobile providers have confirmed with the UK Government that they do not intend to offer 2G or 3G services beyond 2033.

• Why is it happening?

  Network providers are retiring their 2G and 3G services so those radio frequencies can be repurposed for faster, more efficient and more reliable services, such as 4G and 5G. 

• When is it happening?

  All mobile network operators have agreed with the Government to switch off 2G and 3G by 2033. The timelines for each of the operators are: 

  • EE – 3G switch off by 2024. No plans announced for the 2G switch off 
  • Three – 3G switch off by 2024. Three does not have a 2G network 
  • Virgin Media O2 – 3G switch off by 2025, and 2G switch off by the beginning of 2025 
  • Vodafone – 3G switch off by 2024. No plans announced for the 2G switch off 

   

  The operators will make plans to switch off their 2G networks once their 3G networks have been retired. 

  Virtual networks that operate off the main four mobile network operators, such as Giffgaff, Tesco Mobile and Smarty, will mimic the schedules of their parent networks. 

• What does it mean for me? What do I need to do?

  Your mobile network provider will tell you if you are affected and what steps to take. 

  If you have a 3G or 2G only device, you will need to upgrade to a more modern one that allows you to use 4G or 5G. 

• What else do I need to consider?

  The switch off is happening in other parts of the world and if you are travelling to a country where the switch off has already begun, it might affect your roaming experience.  

  You may be unable to make phone calls or access data unless you are connected to WiFi and, in rare cases, it may impact your ability to make calls to emergency services.
