Project GigaHubs

The Digital Leicestershire team at Leicestershire County Council has secured funding from Building Digital UK (BDUK) for a project to install full fibre broadband infrastructure to public sector sites in Leicestershire. This is under the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) initiative known as ‘Gigahubs’, which is part of the Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit aimed at delivering gigabit-capable broadband to hard-to-reach communities.

Our Gigahubs project is the first in the country to be rolled-out.

Following a procurement, Leicestershire County Council has selected BT to connect 43 public sector sites in Leicestershire with gigabit-capable broadband, which includes:

  • Schools
  • Libraries
  • Waste sites
  • Depots

A full list of sites included in the project can be found at the end of this page.

BT has sub-contracted Openreach to build, manage and operate the new infrastructure. The implementation is managed by BT, with the initial phase of infrastructure delivery to begin in July 2023 and the final phase concluding in March 2024.

The below interactive map details all sites included within our Gigahubs project. Hover over the coloured dots on the map to see the details for each site.

This map can be filtered by delivery status, by clicking on the ‘Delivery Status’ drop-down box on the right-hand side of the map and ticking your selection.

To pan across the interactive map, click on the map and then press the ‘F’ key on your keyboard.

The outcomes of Leicestershire’s Gigahubs project will:

  • Provide improved connectivity to 43 public sector sites in mostly rural locations, where fibre connectivity would likely otherwise would not be commercially provided due to costs and/or access
  • Build upon Leicestershire County Council’s commitment to improve connectivity across the county
  • Help achieve digital inclusion for Leicestershire
